St Augustine’s Church





Purpose of the Job

  • As part of a team, to play a key role in the administrative, property and communications aspects of St Augustine’s Church Highbury, and to support both paid staff and volunteers in these areas.


Main Terms and Conditions

  • Job Title: Administrator
  • Timings: Up to 4 days a week (or equivalent) within Monday – Friday. We will consider term time only working provided that telephone cover can be provided at other times.
  •    Salary: £22,000 per annum (pro rata)
  •    Holidays: 23 working days per annum (which includes bank holidays) (pro rata).


Main areas of Responsibility

A key role of the postholder is to provide leadership and/or support in the areas below, and where appropriate work with volunteers to help to carry out those functions, whilst retaining personal responsibility for maintaining high standards in the church’s operations.


Supporting the ministry team

  • Support the Vicar and Treasurer with general administration and communications, possibly including bookkeeping
  • Answer the phone, general post and e-mail enquiries, being a warm and friendly first point of contact
  • Uphold high standards of Christian welcome, witness and service in meeting the needs of the congregation and other users of the church building.
  • Support church groups in their operational needs and be a first point of contact for resolving operational issues.
  • Write and/or oversee the weekly St Augustine’s Welcome sheet, or equivalent.
  • Monitor and order supplies, ministry tools and resources. Receive deliveries.
  • Arrange and attend regular prayer meetings for the ministry team.


Looking after the church premises

  • Work with the Vicar, Churchwardens and PCC (Parochial Church Council) members to ensure that the premises and any associated building/repair works are managed effectively and all church related areas are maintained at a high standard, and are in line with health and safety requirements.
  • Assist in managing servicing schedule  e.g. fire alarm testing, electrical testing etc.
  • Liaise with tradespeople, utility providers, suppliers and contractors as required.
  • Open and lock up when appropriate, ensuring the security of the church building.


Developing rentals

  • Develop rental income in line with the church’s overall strategy and values.
  • Manage and oversee the booking and hiring of rooms in the church building.

  • External relationships: Suppliers and Contractors as appropriate


Probation period

The successful applicant will have a 6-month probation period.


Working parameters

  • Work within approved budgets. 
  • Discuss areas of relevant work with the ministry team.
  • Major changes to policy or practice will require prior agreement of the Vicar.



The Administrator reports to the Vicar and is ultimately accountable to the Parochial Church Council (PCC).


Previous Experience

A successful applicant will have had experience in some or all of the following: 

  • Managing and maintaining buildings used by multiple users and groups
  • Working with tradespeople on building repairs and development
  • Identifying, training and managing volunteers
  • Communications: Email, Social Media and Telephone
  • Technology: Use of Microsoft Office, online banking, general office equipment
  • Book keeping
  • PCC (Parochial Church Council) membership or involvement
  • Working as part of a church staff team
  • Developing a building's rental income.
